Re-awakening the Spirit of Solidarity of
Michael Jackson at the Siliwangi Stadium in Bandung
If the undisputed King of Pop, Michael Jackson,
were still alive, he would probably have flown to Bandung to witness the song
he wrote with Lionel Ritchie, “We Are the World” being performed by no less
than 20,000 people in the unique angklung mega orchestra at the Anglung for the
World Peformance, held at the Siliwangi Stadium, Bandung on
Thursday, 23 April 2015.
“ I’m amazed just imagining an angklung
performance played by such a sea of participants. The
result will surely be spectacular and astonishing! And it will be the talk
among delegates at the 60th Commemoration
of the Asian African Conference” said Tourism Minister Arief Yahya.
Previously, the Guinness World of
Record recorded the largest angklung performance was held in Beijing,
the People’s Republic of China. At the time, The Indonesian Embassy in Beijing
together with the Association of Indonesia-China Solidarity (PPIT) recorded
5,393 angklung players at one performance at the Labour Stadium, Beijing. The
performance in China broke the earlier record made at the National Monument in
Washington DC, USA which recorded 5,102 players.
In Adelaide, Australia, the largest angklung
performance was recorded at the Royal Adelaide Show 2014 on 13th to 14th September. At the annual agricultural fair hosted by the
Royal Agriculture and Horticulture Society of South Australia, it was claimed
that there were in all 6,100 angklung players (from the 7,000 instruments
brought from Indonesia) being played together by those attending the
show. To date, this number is regarded as the highest on record, however no
official statement on this accomplishment in Australia has been made by
Guinness Book of Records.
As far as Minister of Tourism, Arief
Yahya, is concerned it does not really matter where, or by how many
people it is performed, since the angklung traditional music is part and parcel
of Indonesia’s authentic culture, in particular of the people of West Java.”
For, once people hear the word “angklung”, see the bamboo being shaped to
become the angklung musical instrument, or listen to the distinct sounds of
bamboo, they will instantly think of Indonesia. Therefore, Angklung
automatically promotes Indonesia’s rich cultural diversity” stated Minister
Arief Yahya.
The Angklung bamboo musical instrument was
officially recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Heritage of Humanity on 18
November 2010, some 5 years ago in Nairobi, Kenya.
UNESCO’s recognition of The
Angklung followed those for Indonesia’s Keris, Wayang and
Batik which were recognized earlier as World Heritage. Angklung is
also deemed a most important part of the culture and identity of the people of
West Java and Banten. This musical art contains values of
cooperation, mutual respect and social harmony. And it is for these reasons
that it is most fitting that the Angklung is presented at the 60th Commemoration of the historic Asian
African Conference held here in Bandung in 1955.
My opinion :
Build a spirit of solidarity is very important, visible with a bevy of play
angklung to commemorate Michael Jackson as well as to build a spirit of
solidarity he had ever taught before.
